How to Choose Where to Travel
It’s not always easy knowing where to go. There are so many options and things to consider that it can feel a bit overwhelming! You could be well-travelled and be struggling to choose where to travel next, or you may be new to travelling but like the idea of getting away from ‘normal life’ for a bit.
It’s great to talk to people you know who have been away and absolutely loved a holiday, but sometimes there are still so many choices- after all…the world is an amazing place! So how exactly
It’s worth having a look through the pages on this site for inspiration, however if you’re still struggling here are a few questions that may help you make up your mind:
-
Why Do You Want To Travel?
There are many reasons to travel. Some people have a bucket list and want to work their way through it and so will chose where to go based on seeing certain destinations or experiencing certain things.
-
How Long Will You Travel For?
If you only have a couple of weeks off of work, a closer destination with a smaller itinerary is probably more ideal. When you choose where to travel, factor in how long it will take to get there and get around the places you visit. You don’t want to be spending a large chunk of time being sat on transport if you’re spending all that money on going somewhere to see and experience that place!
-
What is Your Travel Budget?
Do you want a luxury 5-star experience or do you want to experience true backpacking and spend as little as humanely possible? (these are both possible in one trip- check out the post Budget Travel Vs Luxury Travel- Which One You Should Choose for more.)

-
How are You Going To Travel?
Do you want to go across land, by air or a combination of the two? Often, going by air is more expensive but can save a lot of time between destinations if time is a bit tight.
If you are a little more flexible, I would encourage you to try a mixture of flying when needed and public land transport when able…it can be a bit of an eye opener and an experience for sure! (see post Using Local Public Transport- is it a Good Idea? for a few examples!)
-
Who Will You Travel With?
Do you fancy a solo adventure, or would you rather go as a pair or group? What if you don’t know anyone who has the time or money to join you, but you’d rather not go alone? Maybe an organised tour would suit you most.
Top Tip
If you do go as a group I’d suggest a small group with some set ground rules e.g. if not everyone wants to do the same thing that’s fine…you are allowed to split and do different things then meet again later. Also, time keeping can become an issue with larger groups- especially if you are all sharing one bathroom and need to use it in the morning to get ready.
-
New Countries or Places You’ve Been Before?
Some people like to revisit places they have been to every year because they have friends there or just really love the place and there is nothing wrong with that…but get out there and see new places too! You might even find a new favourite place.
-
What Are Your Interests?
What you enjoy can play a huge part on where you go and what sort of activities you take part in. If you just want a relaxing holiday where you can lay on a beach all day, it’s worth knowing where the best beaches are within your budget rather than choosing a busy city break or mountain trekking excursion.
How to Choose Where to Travel if You Have any Illnesses or Disabilities
There will still be a way to travel but you may need to adapt certain things or do extra planning and research around things such as transport and suitable activities etc. Unfortunately, a lot of places don’t have the same levels of disability access or are not able to accommodate for specific dietary needs. If you have allergies make sure you take an EpiPen!
I hope this has made it easier to choose where to travel. Please feel free to contact me about ideas for places to go- I’d love to help!
